What is Play-Based Learning?

Play-based learning is a philosophy of teaching that centers around children leading the way in engaging with the world in order to learn basic concepts.  The child's interests and discoveries are what the teaching team uses to develop learning opportunities.  Teachers use

their knowledge of children and learning to guide children to making discoveries while they play.  If we want to learn about measurement in class, the teachers would ensure that rulers, measuring tapes, scales etc. are present in places like the blocks, the sand table etc.  Observation and conversations with children are the main way of assessing what a child has learned and what he/she still needs to learn.  Play is the work of children, it is through play that they learn best.
